The
Opposite of Apathy is Action
My
entire working life has been in the private sector. I have
earned my living with in remote real estate and with other
modest business ventures, depending
always on my own efforts, sink or swim. This has given me a
“can do” attitude.
On the campaign trail, I try to bring this positive
attitude to you, my fellow citizens and voters. Some people
express the opinion that the ordinary person can make no
difference, that it is useless to fight the powerful forces
that seek to set the agenda for growth and our quality of
life.
But attitude + action is the opposite of apathy. Huge
international conglomerates have lots of power, but the
power of the vote is for citizens alone. We must remember
our enormous power as voters. It is part of our heritage of
freedom.
Certain non-voting entities may wish us to feel hopeless or
powerless or fearful. Such negative emotions encourage
voter apathy, and thus low voter turn-out. And then who
controls our future? But we are the best part of Michigan,
and we will not just lay down and die. Yes, I too, believe
in good sisu.
Our U.P. lands are becoming too fragmented. Our government
does not have the vision, but maybe you can see beyond
them…to what sits right under our noses. The Four
Parks plan or something like it can bring lasting,
respectable jobs to the U.P. with controllable, long-term
growth using renewable
resources.
We can retain our sparkling water, shining wilderness and
camp traditions. We have a right to raise our voices about
water--it is a commons. We the people have a
choice…to an extent. Know that choice. I give you
that choice.
My persistent and trusting nature will be an asset in
Lansing for you, the people, as we face the challenges
ahead. If you don’t trust, you don’t receive.
Think of the story of the Great Cincinnatus of ancient
Rome. His elders gave him power, I need your vote.
