NO
SULFIDE MINE
I
believe that honest and fair communication, maintaining our
quality of life, and seeking the truths on issues are very
important in this election.
Because the Upper Peninsula has such a small population,
it’s hard to influence state-level issues. But the
U.P. has much more control over local issues. This
difference is extremely important to understand. We are
keepers of our own fate, but we must take or assert control
of our own U.P. issues.
Sulfide mining on the Yellow Dog Plains is an emergency
U.P. issue that we must deal with now. It brings how we
choose to grow directly to our attention. Growth affects
quality of life. Growth through boom-and-bust sulfide
mining is just too expensive: this energy-intensive, heavy
industry will inevitably damage water quality, and hurt
tourism and recreation that have developed over the past 50
years. The famous wilderness reputation of the U.P. will
suffer and wither away.
Clean, fresh water is another U.P. issue, and also one of
major and growing concern all around the country. To
willfully pollute our clean fresh water for temporary
sulfide mines not only looks bad but is irresponsible.
Coming generations will look back at us in rage and sadness
if we decide to grow this way.
With my Four Parks plan, I have presented a worthy
alternative for economic growth. By upgrading our parks we
will develop further what we are today: a tourist
destination of national importance. With protected places
we can have lasting, respectable jobs, stable communities,
and keep our wilderness traditions.
Sulfide mining does not mix with tourism or our quality of
life. As your State Representative, I will submit
amendments to the sulfide mining law to correct it, and
make it fair to the people of the U.P.
In
tomorrow’s very important election, please vote for
me, Richard Hendricksen. As your next State Representative,
I will be dedicated to our present and future in this
special place.
Thank
you for all your support, Richard Hendricksen
