Some people ask me about the McCormick cabins; a photo is
here at the left.
They remember that back in the mid-1980’s I took
those historic wilderness cabins down. It took two years. I
kept extensive journals at my friend Fred Rydholm’s
insistence.
Someday I plan to write a book on it, and put the cabins
back up as an educational tourist attraction.
The cabins are safe and sound in storage. This past June
17th,
Fred Rydholm and I gave speeches about them and the
McCormick Tract at the McCormick Day celebration in
Michigamme. The Michigamme Historical Society has opened an
exhibit about the McCormick Tract. I feel honored to be
part of this history, to have contributed to the community
in this way.
I would also be honored and humbled to be your next State
Representative.
My strengths are: a 30 year career working with the timber
companies and the same 30 years with tourism….I am a
recreational land man real estate broker. This vast
experience is what I draw on for who I am today and the
concrete issues I revolve around: park formation and
sulfide mining.
I want to create, vie trade, 1 million acres of large
parks… I call this Four Parks.
Sulfide mining must be made safer and be acceptable to the
people most affected by it. The law does not protect us
enough. I was at the rules sessions. I heard and saw, and
wrote pages of commentary to the DEQ. I want to correct the
law through amendments.
As I go from door to door, I try to be straightforward: if
I don’t know the answer for a person’s
political question, I must admit it, squirm some and learn.
Direct communication is one of my values, and I have
realized on the trail that the people want direct
communication.
With gradual growth through improved tourism, such as my
Four Parks proposal, we can have good, lasting jobs and
keep our camp traditions.
My persistent and trusting nature will be an asset in
Lansing for you, the people, as we face the challenges
ahead. If you don’t trust you don’t receive.
